The First Step: Making the Decision
to File for Bankruptcy or Talk to a Lawyer
Filing for bankruptcy may or may not be something you're comfortable with. You may also just be looking for more information. You may have already made the decision to file for bankruptcy but don't know what to do next. In any case, you know that financially speaking something isn't working and something needs to be done.
At the Law Offices of Mark Ankcorn, we understand that our clients want to know more about their options and to carefully consider whether or not filing for bankruptcy is the right thing to do. We don't rush our clients into making this decision. We don't push them toward options that aren't right for them. We are simply here to help and we are very good at what we do.

How Does the Actual Process Start?
For our clients, the process of filing a Chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy can begin as soon as our first meeting. Not a lot of paperwork or documentation is required at this initial meeting either. It is simply a chance to sit down and talk about your financial situation, the various options that might fit your needs and how the process works. This also gives you the opportunity to find out whether or not you're comfortable working with us — something that is very important in any attorney-client relationship.
If you do decide to file for bankruptcy and would like us to help you with that process — we will take it from there.
What Happens After the Petition is Filed?
To some extent, what happens after the petition is filed will depend on whether it is a Chapter 13 or Chapter 7 and various other factors. In either case, however, there will be certain immediate benefits.
For instance, once your petition has been filed with the Bankruptcy Court, your creditors must immediately cease any collection efforts against you or face serious court-imposed penalties. This means no more harassment, no more embarrassing phone calls at work, no more wage garnishments and no more threatening letters. Alone, this can dramatically reduce your stress levels and improve your day-to-day life. In addition, filing a bankruptcy petition can also stop interest from accruing on certain debts.
