MARK ANKCORN: People underestimate the emotional component that's involved in coming to a decision to file for bankruptcy. Oftentimes, they are beleaguered and behind in their payments. They are hounded by creditors. Yet getting to that point where they can say I need to start over again can be a very difficult process.

I practice in the field of consumer bankruptcy because I like to help people. I like to see them get a new start and help them with that transition from being the victim and being pushed around to being somebody who is taking charge of what they have.

Bankruptcy law has changed considerably in the last several years. With the recent economic downturn, there has been an explosion of bankruptcy filings in Southern California. In fact, Southern California is one of the areas that has been hardest hit by the economic crisis with the fall in housing prices and with the rise in unemployment.

All of that adds up to something that is very complicated and is very traumatic for people. My practice is unique because I focus on consumer bankruptcy petitions. That means no businesses, only individuals and families. And it's not just the young, irresponsible 20-year olds who are filing for bankruptcy these days. It's older people. It's younger people. It's families.

People should know that they have options and that they can take control of their finances and their lives again. By coming and talking to an experienced bankruptcy attorney, they can figure out what the best path is for them to restart and renew.
